Telescopic heavy duty transporter

Plastic energy chains allow cable guidance for a 70m trailer for transporting wind turbine blades.

Transporting oversized wind turbine blades requires exceptional trailers: Goldhofer AG has presented a concept for a telescopic trailer. This can extend up to five times its length, ideal for this demanding transport task. Safe guidance of the heavy cable packages relies on Series E4 energy chains.

Profile

  • What was needed: Three Series E4 energy chains
  • Requirements: Safe cable guidance for 70 metres, guidance for a large number of cables with high cable weight.
  • Industry: Transport
  • Success for the customer: The E4.1 provided a robust e-chain that offers the customer plenty of space for cable guidance and planning security due to the reliable system process.
Heavy-duty wind turbine blade transporter Exceptional semi-trailer: This trailer safely transports 70m long wind turbine blades.

Problem

Goldhofer AG is an international transport company specialising in the planning and executing difficult and special transport solutions. Ordinary trailers generally cannot be used for particularly long, bulky goods therefore specialised trailers are coupled to the tractors. The semi-trailer had to safely transport several wind turbine blades, which can be up to 70 metres long. To handle these enormous dimensions, a flexibly adjustable trailer was to be considered. The solution: A five-fold telescopic system that can be extended or retracted to the desired length depending on the transport task.
Once the design was finished, implementing how to guide the large number of cables also presented a major challenge. For the energy supply from the semi-trailer to the rear of the trailer, the system must reliably follow the 70 meter long travel distance. It needs to be robust and safely allow the numerous cables for the energy supply to move with it.

Solution

With the overall concept in mind, the planners set out to find the right cable concept for implementation. They chose our Series E4 plastic energy chain. They chose three units of the robust generation of energy chain for this task. Distributed along the entire length of the trailer, they not only provide safe long travels but also provide significantly more space for the many heavy cables. The key elements of the chosen modular chain system's; quiet operation, low vibration that allows safe and stable operation and easy handling during cable installation. The end result: Safe transport of the oversized wind turbine blades can be guaranteed with a reliable cable guidance concept - over a length of 70 metres from the tractor unit to the rear of the trailer.
Energy chain with cables In addition to the energy supply system's long travel, there was also the challenge of the large cable package to be moved.
