Thanks to their special combination of base polymers, fibres, extenders and solid lubricants, they are extremely wear-resistant. Our gears have already successfully proven themselves in different applications.

In accordance with the predominant parameters in your application, we provide you with free, non-binding advice on the right material and manufacturing and tool technology needed to form your individual gear (toothed component) in a reliable process.

Actuator

Actuators make up a large proportion of vehicle elements that have to be supplied with power and signals. The small units convert electrical signals and pulses into mechanical movements and are responsible for actuation of the throttle valve(s) during acceleration, the automatic closing of boot lids and doors or the shifting and positioning of a seat. The areas of application are manifold, actuators can be found in all areas of the vehicle.   
 
Amongst other things, gears with usually complex geometries are responsible for movement and the transmission of force. By increasing the efficiency of actuators and minimising noise , iglidur® polymer gears have proven their worth in actuators in the automotive industry.

Sustainability of our gears

For our iglidur® gears, you do not need  a single drop of lubricating oil.  Not only our users, but also the environment profit from this. In addition, our tribologically optimised materials produce less abrasion, as a result of which less energy is needed.

This is why we developed our gears:

iglidur® gears have proven their worth in different gearboxes and have also been tested under realistic conditions of use in the igus test laboratory. For example, torque fluctuations, efficiency and backlash of the gearboxes with the iglidur® gears are electrically measured and evaluated. The gathered experience values allow continuous optimisation of our gears and the use in wear-intensive continuous application.
 
iglidur® gears are characterised by their special wear resistance in use. Due to their special material composition of base polymers, fibres, fillers and solid lubricants, they have very low wear properties and do not require additional lubricants. This extends maintenance intervals and reduces expensive downtime minutes.

What is a gear?
A gear is a round component that has uniformly distributed teeth around its circumference. It transfers force between two rotating gears or between a gear and a rack. Depending on the application, further types are used.  
 
What kinds of gear are there?
The most common kinds of gear/toothed components are:  

  • Spur gears (you can find them in our online shop) 
  • Racks 
  • Worm gears 
  • Bevel gears 
Different kinds of gear and toothing are often combined with each other in order to implement certain sequences of movement.  
 
How are the gears made from  iglidur® high-performance polymers?  
At igus, gears are made with the help of three manufacturing methods:
  • Injection moulding with iglidur® granulate materials 
  • Mechanical processing with iglidur® bar stock as the material  
  • 3D printing with iglidur® SLS or FDM materials 
Depending on the enquiry, we will advise you on manufacturing methods and work with you to find the best  economical solution – free of charge, no strings attached.   
 
How are the iglidur® gears tested? 
In our Testlab, we have test rigs that test our gears made of a wide variety of iglidur® materials in different scenarios. We would also be happy to supply you with samples for your own application-related tests.   
 
What is the minimum order quantity? 
 There is no minimum order quantity for our gears. You can submit an enquiry or place an order for any quantity.  
 
Is it necessary to lubricate the iglidur® gears?
External lubrication of the gears is unnecessary. All of the materials we use have been tribologically optimised and designed for dry operation. If you should want to lubricate, however, you can do so in combination with a silicon-free lubricant. 
 
I need a special type of construction - is this possible?  
Yes, the manufacture of special geometries is possible and can be done for all quantity scenarios thanks to our versatile manufacturing methods. We would be happy to advise you with regard to your special geometry and the appropriate material. You can submit an enquiry for your individual gear here.
 
What are the advantages of iglidur® gears? 
The iglidur® gears do not need any external lubrication and are therefore maintenance-free. In addition,  you benefit from the long service life  of our gears, which is due to wear-resistant materials, which we achieve with the formulations of iglidur® materials. Compared to metal gears, plastic gears are quiet and have optimum emergency operating properties. Due to tribological optimisation of the materials, a low coefficient of friction is achieved as well.  
 
When does a gear have to be replaced?  
It has to be replaced as soon as force can no longer be transferred due to wear on the gear. Geometric adaptations of such things as the modulus or number of teeth, or selection of the right material can increase the service life of the gears.   
 
What areas of application are there?
The iglidur® gears are used in all branches of industry.  Depending on the application,  we offer special materials that, for example, have FDA conformity or comply with certain fire standards (such as for the automotive sector) or similar.
