Automated Lego building machine

All cables in one chain to enable the machine to build Lego towers, reliably and without malfunctions

Students, Alexander Thies and Adrian Wörtche, in grade 13 at Landrat Gruber High School in Dieburg built an automated Lego tower building machine as their final project. The device was programmed to be able to pile up Lego Duplo bricks to make towers and walls."To avoid chaos being caused by pneumatic hoses and sensor cables and to allow the machine to work without malfunctioning, it was obvious to both students that the cables and hoses would have to be encased in an energy chain. The two had already heard of energy chains because they had been to the Motek with their course in 2010. The igus® stand and the impressive measuring machines where they were able to see the energy chains in use had been a lasting memory. They did not wait long to submit an inquiry to igus® and applied for the yes student and trainee programme. igus® then sponsored a suitable energy chain for their machine. An SPS and two crossing lead screw linear systems, where a gripper device to grip and place the Duplo bricks is mounted, were used alongside the energy chain. This gripper device removes a brick from a store and stacks them on a baseplate. The gripper itself is composes of several cylinders than can be controlled individually. / Laying e-chains® that then guide the cables to the lead screws and to the gripper.

The e-chain system® was used (08.40.028.0)
