Technical data:

  • What was needed: precise actuator movements and positioning without regular maintenance
  • Requirements: Extreme accuracy even under tough environmental conditions, great precision, no lubrication or maintenance, no dust and dirt adherence
  • Products used: dryspin® lead screws from our standard range, lead screw nuts with special geometries

  • Success for the customer: A series for precise travels, reduced costs because no maintenance is necessary, service life calculation capability thanks to quick test results, and increased customer interest due to unfamiliar lead screw nut materials

Highly precise linear drive with dryspin lead screw unit

In the past two years, Aris has significantly intensified its development work and not only expanded production, but also started a new laboratory with a test bay. The company has also opened up completely new areas of application. While proven product lines such as the aforementioned Tensor or the Nano series perform highly precise rotary movements, the "Linearis" – as the name suggests – was designed for equally precise linear motion.

Dipl.-Ing. Rolf Schneider, one of the two Managing Directors of Aris: "This new series targets applications such as the adjustment of ventilation and supply air flaps in automotive industry paint shops. " Here, actuator precision plays an important role in energy management and, ultimately, in painting quality because impurities must be kept away. For this reason, the Linearis drives are themselves – this is the technical term – "free of paint wetting impairment substances (PWIS)".

"dryspin® inside": advantages of high helix threads

The Linearis drives convert the rotary movement of the electric motors into a precise linear movement and thereby apply 600 to 2,500N actuating force, depending on the installation size. The dryspin technology developed by igus, in which a plastic nut made of wear-resistant high-performance polymer moves along a stainless steel high helix lead screw, is a central component of this drive system.

These high helix threads offer specific advantages:
High pitch ensures large strokes with few revolutions
Lower drive load
Speed reduction
► Reduced noise

ARIS uses dryspin drives from the igus standard range, and only adjusts the outer geometry of the nut individually. Due to the two axial plain bearings made of igus high-performance polymer
iglidur Q in the lead screw support block, high loads can be supported; unit clearance can be set with the thrust bearing.

Sometimes persuasion is necessary

Some customers who were introduced to the new drive by ARIS were initially sceptical. Michael Andersen: "Initial reservations about the plastic material could easily be resolved with a bit of gentle persuasion. igus® service life calculations and ARIS test results speak for themselves, and the fact that the dry-operating linear drive needs no lubrication is a big advantage in painting as in many other applications. “

The same applies to maintenance-free operation. The linear drives so far used in these areas have had to be lubricated once a week, which not only takes time, but also increases the risk of dirt accumulation. Moreover, as noted by the ARIS sales personnel, for some customers the reference to igus components was a good "door opener", which eliminated the scepticism about plastics.

Good development work

The first prototypes of the new linear drive were first intensively tested in the ARIS laboratory. The dismantled drive elements were then tested by igus – with positive results. This collaboration resulted in a very short development time. Michael Andersen: "We arrived at the results we needed faster than expected. "

Among the tests ARIS performed in its in-house laboratory were the Linearis system load tests and a test series with different types of contamination. Only when all the tests were completed satisfactorily did ARIS began with the market launch, which has already resulted in many satisfied users in the meantime. Rolf Schneider: "Linearis has established itself quickly – in new system project planning and in the retrofitting and upgrading of existing facilities. “
