Metal-free cycling - design study: xiros® wheel bearing for the igus:bike

Two-component ball bearing for the igus® bike

Zero lubrication, maintenance and corrosion

We made the wheel bearing metal-free. The two-component wheel bearings* for the igus:bike contain lubrication-free, virtually maintenance-free plastic ball bearings. These are characterised by their exceptional wear resistance and low noise emissions; made for generations of cyclists.

Our wheel bearings once again demonstrate the demands we place on our bikes: long-lasting and innovative use of plastics prevents wear and waste, helping people and the environment in equal measure. Under development by igus.

*Installation sizes 6012 and 6018

Sustainability

  • The igus:bike made from recycled plastic is corrosion-resistant and lubrication- and maintenance-free
  • igus supports the circular economy of plastics and is investing in chemical recycling. More at: igus.eu/sustainability

Wheel bearing test in the company's own test laboratory The wheel bearing is thoroughly tested in our own test laboratory
What makes it an innovation?
▷ Combining the specifications of a soft and hard polymer to obtain a ball bearing that is both strong and quiet

What goals have been achieved?
▷ The development of a world's first - with two components, customers meet more requirements than with just one

How do customers benefit from the innovation?
▷ Higher axial load capacity compared to existing soft xirodur materials
▷ Ideal for higher speeds
