Quiet and failure-free plastic energy chain in container loading crane

As this STS crane works alone, a particularly failure-free roller energy chain was installed.

A particular requirement in the design of this crane was noise reduction, as the harbour is located in the immediate vicinity of a residential area. Furthermore, a long service life of the energy supply and therefore reliability had to be guaranteed, as there is no other crane available at this location. Our P4 energy chain system is used here, which runs particularly smoothly and therefore quietly.

Problem

This application by Hans Künz GmbH involves a large loading crane at a harbour in Austria for loading containers for ships, trains and trucks.
However, the system operators were faced with particular obstacles when implementing the energy and cable routing for the trolley, as the harbour is located near a densely populated residential area. Due to the associated special noise protection requirements, the noise level of the entire system was not allowed to exceed 78dbA. Further requirements for the cable guidance related to the robustness and absolute reliability of the system, as there was no second crane for handling containers. A failure of the crane would therefore lead directly to the failure of the entire terminal.

Solution

The high demands on noise protection and reliability led the plant operators to look into our plastic energy chains. Today, our P4 energy chain solution is used in the terminal. The system is particularly suitable for high cable weights and long travel distances, which are particularly common in crane construction. The design enables the chain to roll quietly, with the upper run rollers running through the rollers of the lower run. By reducing the necessary drive force of the e-chain to less than 25%, the movement of the chain is significantly facilitated. The travel speed of the trolley in the application of 2.5 metres per second is therefore no problem for the chain system, which travels 113 metres.
In addition to the energy chain system, we also supplied the entire chainflex cables pre-assembled and fitted with connectors, as well as the trough in which the chain travels.
