Robust energy chains and guide trough with ascent guard for 1500-ton shipyard crane

• What was needed: Heavy duty roller energy chain of the 5050RHD series
• Requirements: Permanently safe cable routing over 122 m travel, with a cable weight of 18 kg/m. Preventing the energy chain from rearing up due to the high thrust forces.

• Success for the customer: The robust 5050 RHD chains, which have been in operation since 2008, are optimally equipped for the high cable weights and long travel distances. A riser guard integrated into the guide trough prevents the energy chain from standing up.

Safe cable routing, even over long travelling distances - in strong winds, sometimes heavy rain and corrosive sea air. With this challenge in mind, the two travelling trolleys were to be supplied safely with power and data for this shipyard crane, which is strikingly red to match the shipyard operator's logo.
The 122 m travel of the crane trolleys had to be taken into account when designing the cable routing, as did the impressive 18 kg weight per metre caused by the heavy cables. Due to the high frictional forces at this weight, a sliding energy chain was out of the question. In addition, with a cable routing of these dimensions, special care had to be taken to avoid a possible chain ascent, so that the e-chain® could not be reared up by the thrust "" .

As a sliding energy chain reaches its technical limits at some point when travelling such long distances due to the high drive energy required and the high frictional forces, the operator opted for two of our heavy-duty roller energy chains from the 5050RHD series. The extremely robust chain series with high tensile stability has been specially designed for these tasks. The integrated roller elements minimise friction, which means that travel distances of over 400 m and cable loads of up to 50 kg/m can be safely achieved.
The customer also opted for our chainflex® cable programme, which was specially developed for moving applications.
To prevent the energy chain and cable from standing up due to the high drive force, the customer was also advised to use a riser guard integrated into the guide trough. We also test the behaviour of the energy chain 5050R over long travel distances and with high thrust in our in-house laboratory. This means we know the limits of our products and can always offer our customers the best possible overall system.
