Electric catamaran

Profile

What was needed:
spherical plain bearings and plain bearings
Requirements:
use in seawater, UV radiation and high temperatures
Industry:
boat building
Success for the customer:
maintenance-free bearings and custom-made plain bearings

Problem:

Bearing components were needed that could withstand salt water and the elements and at the same time have a long service life. A custom-made plain bearing was required for one bearing position.

Solution:

iglidur plain bearings from igus are maintenance-free due to incorporated solid lubricants and durable in weather and salt water. The production of individual plain bearings is part of our core business. A solution was therefore found here as well.

Custom made plain bearing for catamaran

Maintenance-free in salt water and heat

Ceclo is a catamaran with a unique design. The environment plays a special role in this catamaran as it is 100% electrically powered and 80% recyclable. Ceclo has been manufactured in southern France since 2016 and the REV shipyard worked with igus as early as 2014, during product development. Together, suitable components and materials were developed and selected for the catamaran's bearings.

REV shipyard products are used worldwide in a marine environment so special plain bearing materials are required for the bearing points. In addition to salt water, the catamaran is also exposed to intense heat and intensive use. As the plain bearings are used in the steering, the lifting mechanism of the electric motor and in the gearbox, they also need a long service life. The task was therefore to find the right plain bearing materials for these requirements. Additionally, a plain bearing with special dimensions had to be manufactured for one of the bearing positions.

The igubal spherical bearing and the plain bearing with special dimensions made of the material iglidur H are now used. This material is characterised primarily by high temperature and chemical resistance. It is also suitable for underwater applications and can therefore be used in a catamaran without any problems.
