Till today the roof wing doors on the ISMA series race cars were automatically operated with two pneumatic cylinders depending on the vehicle speed. As the nitrogen gas collecting main has no lubricating effect whatsoever, wear and function problems were a permanent challenge. Besides, it wasn't possible to replace the two cylinders with a single one, because the design solutions were too difficult.
The newly developed cylinder-lid/bottom fastening can be dismantled in about 20 to 30 seconds for this cylinder size without using any kind of tool. By the use of iglidur® bearings, the cylinder is completely maintenance-free, and the weight can be reduced by about 10% of the original solution.
