- Connectors are fitted with contact pins that fit snugly into the openings of the sockets and thus transmit the flow of electric current or light waves. Connectors that are part of devices are referred to as built-in connectors.
- Connectors, which are used for the power supply, are also called power plug-in connectors.
- Signal plug-in connectors are used to forward information, data and signals
- Sockets at the end of a cable are also called couplings.
SUB-D connectors are used for data transmission. The term is derived from the word D-Subminiature. Sometimes these industrial plug-in connectors are also called D-SUB connectors. The D stands for the outer shape of the connectors and sockets, which forms a trapezoid with rounded corners. This shape ensures that they cannot be plugged together the wrong way by mistake.
